Deputy Minister opens EU-backed visitor centre in south Pembrokeshire
Mr Davies attended the celebration event at the National Trust's Stackpole estate where the tourism and conservation project, Stackpole Rediscovered, has been underway.
The £3m project has been backed with £1.8m from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government and has created 12 jobs. The funds have helped to refurbish the visitor centre and accommodation facilities, as well as helping to fund a programme of educational and conservation activities.
Mr Davies said that much work had been done to transform the site into an exciting tourist attraction, which will help to create economic benefits for Pembrokeshire and surrounding areas.
"I’m pleased we have been able to invest EU funds in this project and I recognise the achievements of those involved in bringing it to fruition which will encourage visitors and boost tourism in this unique part of Wales.
"Looking ahead we are determined for our European Programmes to be among the most successful in the EU in shaping the conditions for smart, sustainable and inclusive economic growth in line with Europe 2020 and our Programme for Government.
“I now look forward to consulting further with Welsh partners on how best to invest any future EU funds to help maximise job creation, economic growth and prosperity for the citizens of Wales."
While at Stackpole, Mr Davies toured the site and said that while he hadn't ruled out any areas to receive funding, tough decisions would have to be made to ensure that any future EU funding is invested in activities which have the greatest economic impact.
"This is a difficult economic time compared to the previous funding periods – addressing our economic and labour market challenges must be our priority to transform Wales’ economic prospects and drive growth."
Mr Davies added that the environment sector and tourism would still be important parts of future EU programmes in Wales, as would all the Welsh Government's key sectors.
A full public consultation on the detail of the prospective European Programmes 2014-2020 in Wales will take place at the end of this year.
