The £19m Bridges into Work project, backed with £10.5m from the European Social Fund, is helping Kirstie Sacre of Tredegar to become a primary school teacher.

Through the scheme, Kirstie started a Council for Awards in Children’s Care and Education (CACHE) course at Brynmawr Learning Action Centre to become a teaching assistant. As part of the course she attends weekly evening lessons as well as a 120 hour placement at primary schools in the area. On completion, she is hoping to go to university to study primary teaching.

She said:

The project is great in the way it provides people like me with an opportunity to get into work. I would never have believed that I could have achieved all this, I feel I am more confident and I am looking forward to starting University.

The project is led by Torfaen County Borough Council in partnership with five other local authorities (Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Bridgend and Merthyr Tydfil). Providing free local learning and training opportunities to help more people find employment.
